Getting Started

1. Grant Photos Access

  • Launch PhotoVault Backup
  • Click "Request Access" when prompted
  • Allow full Photos library access

2. Configure Export

  • Choose export scope (All Photos, Specific Year, Specific Month, or Specific Album)
  • Toggle "Include Videos" if desired
  • Toggle "Use Original Filenames" to keep camera names (e.g., IMG_1234.jpg)
  • Review estimated export size

3. Select Destination

  • Click "Select Export Folder"
  • Choose where to save your backup
  • App will remember this location

4. Start Export

  • Click "Start Export"
  • Monitor progress and time estimates
  • Cancel anytime if needed
  • After completion, optionally set a backup reminder for next month

Where are my photos exported?

Photos are exported to the folder you select, organized into year/month subdirectories:

What file formats are supported?

All Photos library formats are preserved:

  • Images: HEIC, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, etc.

You'll be prompted to choose:

  • Overwrite: Replace existing files
  • Skip: Keep existing files and skip duplicates

Does this work with iCloud Photos?

Yes! The app automatically downloads iCloud photos during export.

How long does export take?

This depends on:

  • Number of photos/videos
  • iCloud download speeds
  • Storage device speed
  • Time estimates are shown during export

Is my data safe?

Yes! PhotoVault Backup:

  • Works completely offline
  • Makes no network connections
  • Stores no data except your folder preference
  • Your photos remain entirely under your control

Troubleshooting

Photos library access denied

  1. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security → Photos
  2. Ensure PhotoVault Backup is checked and set to "Full Access"
  3. Restart the app

Insufficient storage space

  1. Check available space at your destination
  2. Try a smaller export scope (specific month)
  3. Free up space or use external storage

Export seems stuck

  1. Check if iCloud downloads are in progress
  2. Check network connection (for iCloud downloads)
  3. Cancel and restart export if needed

App won't launch

  1. Ensure you have macOS 26.0 or later
  2. Try restarting your Mac
  3. Reinstall from the Mac App Store
