Hakase

Privacy Policy for Hakase

Last updated: August 15, 2026

Hakase is a Japanese vocabulary trainer for macOS that does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. There is nothing to opt out of, because nothing is gathered in the first place.

Data Collection

Hakase does NOT collect any personal data:

  • No analytics or usage tracking
  • No crash reporting or telemetry
  • No user accounts or registration
  • No data is sent to Codeform or third parties

Network Access

Hakase makes no network connections at all. The app works entirely offline:

  • The dictionary, example sentences and all study data ship inside the app
  • There is no cloud service, no sync, and no server to talk to
  • The app is not granted network access by its sandbox entitlements

Data Storage

Everything Hakase knows about your studying is stored locally on your Mac, inside the app's own sandbox container:

  • Per-word statistics and review scheduling
  • Daily counts and streak history
  • Your settings and any words you add yourself
  • Translations you mark as valid, so the app accepts them next time

This data never leaves your device. It is stored per macOS user account, so separate users of the same Mac keep separate progress.

Adding Words From Other Apps

Hakase can add a word from text you select anywhere on your Mac, via the Services menu:

  • macOS passes the app only the text you explicitly selected and sent
  • The text is looked up in the built-in dictionary, on your device
  • Nothing is transmitted anywhere

Notifications (Optional)

Hakase can optionally remind you about a word that is due for review:

  • Off by default — permission is only requested if you turn reminders on
  • Notifications are created and answered entirely on your device
  • No reminder or answer data is collected or transmitted

Importing From Anki (Optional)

Hakase can import your study progress from an Anki deck export:

  • Only the file you explicitly choose is read
  • The file is processed locally and is not transmitted anywhere
  • Hakase reads only card intervals and note fields, to match words and carry your progress over

Screen Sharing

Hakase can hide its quiz panel from screenshots, recordings and shared screens. This uses a standard macOS window setting and involves no data collection of any kind.

Third-Party Services

Hakase does not use any third-party services, analytics, or tracking tools.

Deleting Your Data

Deleting Hakase leaves its data in your user Library's container folder. Removing that folder removes everything the app ever stored.

Dictionary Data

Hakase includes dictionary and example data published under open licences: JMdict (Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group, CC BY-SA), the Tanaka Corpus via the Tatoeba project (CC BY), word frequency data from wordfreq (CC BY-SA), and JLPT level lists from Jonathan Waller's JLPT Resources (CC BY). These are bundled with the app; using them involves no network requests and no data sharing.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted at this URL with an updated "Last updated" date.
